| From Shauna Smith, with Castle Rock Strings Practice tips that Dan and I learned at the Indiana string pedagogy workshop from Mimi Zweig: #1- FBB (finger before bow)--The violist must place correct finger, then bow the note. This takes a lot of patience but really works for the faster passages where the fingers and bow are not coordinated or the notes just need to be learned. #2 - repeat/slur--All rhythm is ignored. The first note of the passage is played with a down bow, then repeated in an up bow and slurred to the next note which is then repeated in a down bow and slurred to the next note ad nauseum. Repeat/slur works well for improving intonation, especially where there are shifts, because the shift can be better heard and felt within the slur I forgot to mention my favorite practice tip. I keep a cup of recently frozen chocolate chips near my stand--little rewards. They're nice and cold, so the chocolate doesn't get on my fingers! Linda Kline Lamar's Practice Remedies!
